A missionary friend of ours stopped by a couple of Sundays ago to talk with us about her new responsibilities that she will be facing when she returns to her mission field in Africa this fall. She had a book with her called "Christless Christianity" by Michael Horton. She was so enthused about the book that my wife went out and bought it as soon as she could get to a Christian bookstore. She got the only copy they had at the time.
So far, I have only read the first chapter but the diagnosis is pretty clear. Mr. Horton has four points that he will be making in this book and I will sum them up in just a few words - The church in America needs to get Back to the Bible and stop preaching "Health and Wealth", "Being Purpose Driven" or "The Power of Positive Thinking" or other gospels that you can come across.
I am currently attending a rather large church that is part of the association of churches that use materials from two of the largest mega-churches in the country - Willow Creek and SaddleBack. I am really concerned that we are failing many people in our congregations when the leaders of our churches believe they have to tone down the message to keep the seekers from staying away if they might be confronted with their sinful lives or the fact that they could be going to Hell if they don't receive the gift that Christ has to offer if they would just believe the simple message of John 3:16.
Well, there I have laid it out on the table. What do you think? Will we be able to recover from this waywardness and return to the Truth that can set us Free. I pray that we can and will.
